This question comes up quite often in the marketing sphere, where people tend to assign a value to the length of a content. As I was researching this topic a few years ago, I came across various answers, anywhere between 500 – 1000+, but this didn’t settle with me, the variance was too high and I needed a clearer answer. After a lot of trial and error, I figured out that this wasn’t a guessing game, and there was a method to the madness of ranking on google.
I figured the best place to start would be to research the top google results for various topics of interest, this would help us pinpoint what length of content would be working for the topic or the keywords we are looking to rank for. As a result, I found the following method to have the highest yield when it comes to ranking:
Method:
1. Average out the content of the top 10 websites.
2. +-15% contingency (Incase your topic is shorter or longer)
Process:
1. Search topic of interest on google
2. Go to the top 10 websites
3. Copy their content and paste into Word
4. Repeat this step for all top 10 websites (add them all to the same word document)
5. Do a word count using the tools function in Word
6. Divide the number by 10
7. This will give you the average length of content, optimal to rank on google8. Remember to add/subtract 15% contingency
